Lady GaGa is the Pop Megastar we Deserve
Don’t get me wrong, I resisted this for a long time. Lady GaGa’s terrifyingly hypnotic house beats and chant-y melodies do nothing for me except give me a headache. But her new tune, Bad Romance, and the amazingly bizarre video to follow, are a rare breed of brilliance.
But beyond her wildly popular dance tunes, odd fashion sense and questions about her sexuality, Lady GaGa represents something deeper. Like many groundbreaking artists, she is more representative of a time and place than she is a good musician. Her specific brand of visual marketing, dance-trance and repetitive, signal-jamming sing-a-longs could only exist now.
I, like most people I know, knew what Lady GaGa looked like before I ever heard her music. I knew her as the hook on several rap remixes and had heard rumors of her being born a man. As an acoustic version of Poker Face will tell you, she has a perfectly lovely voice but it is buried under layers of synth, AutoTune and other vocal effects, and with good reason. The lyrics and melodies, while catchy, are clearly third on the priority checklist behind the aesthetic–the feel of the song–and the music video.
When the Bad Romance single hit the web on October 26th, it made almost no impact. Radio stations had not begun playing it and it had not hit the clubs. To this day, it still has not cracked #9 on the U.S. singles chart. But when subsequent video hit YouTube yesterday, it received over 1 million hits. The number climbed higher still today and had to be removed due to overwhelming traffic. Blogs from Perez Hilton to the Huffington Post ran the video, commenting along to the beat.
Lady GaGa has brought us back to the age of the music video. And what better time to do it; an age where there is a SmartPhone in every pocket and a viral video in every e-mail box. The iPod has diminished the need for full albums, but that is old news. Hip-Hop and DJ culture have proven that people are content just hearing the hooks of classic songs tacked on to rap verses. But that is so yesterday. Lady GaGa has taken the concept one step further, worming her way into every aspect of pop culture. Her songs are dancefloor fluff and DJ gold. Her hooks were made to appear in rap songs all poppy and repetitive. Her videos are full of crazy costumes and forwarded all over the web. This design touches music, film, fashion, and art and breaks each foray down into easily digested nuggets. Its art in pill form.
Inventions like HD TV, CGI, Reality shows and viral videos have made us a more visual culture. Its a faster way to absorb any medium and makes listening to music feel like a trip back to the stone age. The fact that hearing Lady GaGa is not enough for anyone marks a new era in music. Fashion and aesthetic were always part of the whole. But there was always a voice first. In the era of GaGa, her voice almost seems like an inconvenience, getting in the way of all her other communication tools. No one is sure where this will lead but damn if that ain’t one cool video.
I still think Lady gaga is a very successful artist, and I love her songs. That had to be made clear before I say what I have to say. I think Lady gaga looks like a man. She has very rough features which creep me out! Anyone agrees?
